Scott Sadowsky - Spanish Linguistics

I'm Scott Sadowsky, an academic linguist based in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. I've been professor of linguistics at the Universidad de Cartagena (Cartagena de Indias, Colombia) and the Catholic University of Chile (Santiago, Chile), a research associate at the Department of Linguistic and Cultural Evolution of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History (Jena, Germany), and a professor of linguistics at the Universidad de La Frontera (Temuco, Chile).

My main research interests are sociolinguistics, phonetics, language contact and corpus linguistics. My latest project, the Sociolinguistic Speech Corpus of Spoken Chilean Spanish (COSCACH), unites all of these fields.

My research has focused on a relatively under-studied variety of Spanish -- Chilean Spanish. There's nothing quite as intriguing as finding mysteries in plain sight, and this geolect is full of them. I also work on Mapudungun, an indigenous language isolate spoken in parts of Chile and Argentina. I'm currently co-directing a project to document and study the phonetic and phonological variation of Mapudungun, called --appropriately enough-- Sound Comparisons: Mapudungun.

My teaching centers on phonetics and sociolinguistics, but I've also taught subjects ranging from Praat and palatography and the history of Spanish and language contact. I also do extension -- bringing the fascinating world of linguistics to the general public, by way of ¡Usted sí lo dice!, a blog hosted by cognitive science and humanities site Tercera cultura (in Spanish), as well as informal talks.

Finally, if you're looking for more information on the EMIS socioeconomic stratification system for linguistic research, see here.
